WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - Police have identified the victim of a drowning at a private lake in south Wichita on Tuesday night.
Wichita Police Captain Aaron Moses says just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, officers responded to the 3600 block of South Broadway for a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers found 35-year-old Aubrey Mayo found dead in the lake.
Police say Mayo was swimming at Go Lake with an innertube and her friends lost sight of her.
Investigators say she was last seen around 7 p.m. and that friends found the innertube washed ashore and called police.
Drones and rescue crews in boats searched the lake for hours overnight and recovered her body early Wednesday morning.
The Sedgwick County Coroner will determine the cause of death. At this time, the death is not believed to be the result of criminal activity.
An online fundraiser started by Mayo’s sister says she leaves behind a teenage daughter that she was raising as a single mother.
“While we don’t know what obstacles lie ahead of us we know that it is going to be a long road,” the GoFundMe says. “Any support from those who loved Aubrey would be greatly appreciated. She touched the hearts of many people in her short time with us. The service arrangements are still to be determined.”
