HENDERSON, Ky. (KAKE) - A Kentucky family is mourning the loss of their 9-year-old daughter after she collapsed on the playground during recess on the first day of school.

The family of Lucy Nash said Tuesday that was pronounced brain dead at a local hospital.

“On the first day of school Lucy collapsed and had a cardiac event,” a GoFundMe page for the family reads. “Her little brain went many minutes without oxygen while they were trying to save her life.”

Lucy was life-flighted to a children’s hospital in Indianapolis where her family says she will never wake up again.

“Luciana Laine Nash, sister, lover, catcher, reader, cartwheeler, naturalist, singer, LEGO master builder, child of god, and friend of anyone, passed to the next place where hopefully Christ met her and experienced a hug that truly changes lives,” Lucy’s father, Ryan Nash wrote in a Facebook post.

“We got 9 years, 56 days of abundant, joyous, carefree and compassionate life together,” the post continued. “And despite the unexplainable agony, I’m glad for every hour.”

Her family says Lucy’s body is now being prepared for organ donation.

“Over the next few days Lucy’s body will be examined and cared for, and the organs and tissues she no longer needs will be given to help as many people as possible,” her dad wrote. “Keeping her heart going maximizes the good she can do. All she ever wanted to do was good.”
