WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) - The Wichita Public Schools Board of Education voted unanimously Monday night to sign a new agreement with BSN Sports to make Nike the official provider of uniforms for their high school sports teams.
"Nike is going to be the uniforms that will be bought for all of our high schools moving forward," says the district's athletic director Chris Asmussen. "Everything that we will buy, such as football jerseys through basketball uniforms, through track uniforms, will all be Nike."
Asmussen said that the district's initial contract with BSN had Under Armour provide the uniforms. He said that because the company changed the model of its school program, Wichita was able to look for better deals, and went with Nike.
"The main reason we go through BSN for a uniform deal, or branding deal is because it lays out the percentages of the discounts that we get. So right now, we're looking at 40% off of Nike uniforms and 35% off of shoes. And so these things set those, those limits are those that amount, so we know what the budget is going to be. And we can kind of plan around it."
Asmussen hopes this can help the district out with its recent budget shortfall, as the district is trying to cut costs.
He adds that parents of athletes may also be able to benefit when it comes to getting Nike apparel.
"Instead of going to a retail store, many of our parents will hopefully be able to benefit from buying, say Nike shoes through the online fliers provided through our schools, where they would actually get the discount as well. And that's one of the main things we want to do is pass that savings on to the parents."
Many of the teams still have the Under Armour gear, and Asmussen says those uniforms will run through their five-year cycle, then be replaced with Nike branded clothing.Â
